Elf Name Generator
You’re building your elven ranger — a noble scribe from a sun-dappled forest, or a secretive mage from a crystal city. The backstory is solid, but the character still feels nameless.

What makes an elf name sound right
An elf’s name should whisper of old forests, starlit magic, and quiet grace. Elvish sounds tend to be long, fluid, and poly-syllabic, often built around elements that suggest star, light, tree, water, or song — and they favor soft consonants over harsh consonant clusters.
High Elf style
Refined and formal — names that could belong to scholars, mages, or nobility.
Wood Elf style
Earthier and more clipped — names that fit rangers, scouts, and forest-dwellers.
Moon & Sun Elf style
Celestial-leaning — names that lean toward light, sky, and distant places.
Dark Elf (Drow)
A genuinely different sound — sharper and more sibilant. Use the dedicated Drow generator for this one.
Choosing the right name
Say it aloud
Does it flow like water or music? It should be pleasant to speak, not a tangle of apostrophes.
Check the fit
Match the name to your character’s personality and station — a rugged scout might not suit a name that sounds purely regal.
Test for belonging
Say it alongside your other elven names. Do they sound like they come from the same culture?
Frequently asked questions
What makes an elf name sound authentic?
Flowing, vowel-rich sounds with soft consonants like L, M, N, R, and TH, and often two or three syllables — a rhythm that reads as ancient and melodic rather than sharp or harsh.
Do you support High Elf, Wood Elf, Moon Elf, and Sun Elf variants?
The generator currently produces one consistent elvish sound rather than distinct output per subrace. For a genuinely different sound profile, the Dark Elf (Drow) has its own dedicated generator, since drow naming leans sharper and more sibilant than standard elf names.
Do the generated names come with real translated meanings?
No — the “Evokes” line under each name is thematic flavor (starlight, old forests, quiet memory), not a literal translation into a constructed language. Treat it as tone guidance, not an established etymology.
Can I use these names in D&D or other RPG campaigns?
Yes. Every generated name is free to use in home campaigns, published fiction, or any other creative project, with no attribution required.
How should I choose between multiple generated names?
Say each one aloud, check that it fits the character’s personality and station, and test it alongside any other elf names already in your world to make sure they sound like they belong to the same culture.
Can I generate names for a whole elven village or court at once?
Yes. Set the count to whatever number you need and generate a full batch in one click, with no duplicates in that batch.
Do I need an account to use the generator?
No. There’s no sign-up, login, or email required — every generator on Mythic Name Forge works instantly in your browser.
Are these names suitable for other fey or forest-dwelling races?
Yes. The naming style works for any graceful, nature-connected culture, not strictly official D&D elves.
Is the generator free and unlimited?
Yes, no limit on how many names you generate, and it will always stay free.
